A hospital in Peoria, Illinois, is the subject of a new lawsuit alleging that it pressured a woman to abort her unborn baby girl after medical staff incorrectly administered the wrong pharmaceutical drug to the girl’s mother during a routine checkup, which put her pre-born child at risk of serious birth defects.
According to Reneizha Morris, the woman in question, employees at UnityPoint Health-Methodist experienced some kind of “miscommunication” during her regular checkup, which resulted in her being injected with a pharma drug known as methotrexate that carries serious birth defects as one of its side effects. It was during this same visit that Morris also learned that she was pregnant with what would have been a healthy, seven-week-old baby.
When doctors at the hospital realized what they had done, they allegedly called Morris in for two separate meetings after this checkup, during which they pressured her to abort her unborn child in order to cover up for their mistake. The hospital’s “risk manager,” Morris says, actually scheduled an abortion for her against her wishes, which she says she refused after seeing an ultrasound image of her unborn baby girl.
But UnityPoint’s risk manager apparently wouldn’t let Morris make her own decision on the matter, and continued to call her family after the fact about still going through with the abortion they so desperately wanted her to get. The hospital even went so far as to offer Morris bribe money in the form of $2,000 in cash if she would just agree to go in for “a consultation” at a Planned Parenthood abortion clinic in Chicago.
“Morris’s attorneys have found the hospital’s records suddenly trail off at this point on how and when she supposedly decided to terminate the pregnancy,” the Peoria Journal Star reported about the case.
“Following the canceled procedure, the hospital’s risk manager had two phone calls with her family, which have been omitted from the medical record. On December 5, the hospital’s risk manager asked Morris to come to the hospital to pick up $2,000 in cash and a letter stating the money was to be used for ‘a consultation’ at a Chicago-area Planned Parenthood clinic.”

In the end, Morris decided to go through with the abortion that UnityPoint was pushing her to get, insisting that she didn’t know what else to do. She’s now seeking more than $50,000 in damages from the hospital, which clearly was just trying to cover up its mistake by getting rid of Morris’s “problem” pregnancy so it wouldn’t have to pay for the child’s later medical expenses caused by the malpractice of its medical staff.
“This case has one of the ugliest fact patterns I have ever seen: A perfectly healthy fetus was given a deadly injection based on reckless communication,” stated family attorney Thomas R. Mulroy III.
“The hospital administration knew full well they would have been legally responsible for the considerable healthcare costs associated with the baby’s birth injury. The hospital purely had their own interests in mind and failed to take Reneizha’s wishes into consideration.”
If you really stop to think about it, UnityPoint’s horrific approach to this situation, which it directly caused, is really no different than women who irresponsibly get pregnant, only to later claim that they deserve the “right” to terminate their unwanted child through medical violence – except in this case, bribery was used to coerce a woman into exercising this “right” against her own wishes.
“No one should ever have to make that decision,” Morris revealed in a statement. “I think about what happened every single day and I hope another woman will never have to feel the pain I have felt since this happened.”
